Sir Robert Ho Tung, whose grave lies in a quiet corner behind Sir Catchick's, became compradore to Jardine Matheson at the age of eighteen. Through hard work and sheer ability he triumphed over the deep prejudices of the time against Eurasians to become the first non-European to be given permission to live on the Peak.
His generosity was enormous and many different causes profited from it, including Hong Kong University, where he funded the Ho Tung Chair of Clinical Surgery, the Ho Tung Engineering Workshop, and the Lady Ho Tung Hall for women undergraduates.
In 1915 he became the first person of Chinese descent to be knighted. He also received decorations from the governments of China, Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, and his Holiness the Pope for his contributions to diplomatic relations between China and the West.
