The water's edge followed the line of Johnston Road and the street names-Ship Street, Sampan Street, and Schooner Street-evoke an image of warehouses and piers with sailing ships anchored in the bay beyond.
Just before the end of the bridge you can see part of Southorn Playground. The south side of the playground itself would have been part of the harbour up until the completion of the East Praya reclamation scheme in 1930. It would have been alive with sampans ferrying goods out to the ships anchored in the deep water.
